Serfass Construction

Although Serfass Construction has gained notable market share in the Lehigh Valley with awards such as Moravian Academy’s Athletic & Wellness Center and the Summit Splash Water Park at Blue Mountain, it is their national growth potential that has company principals all fired up.

In addition to a multi-phase corporate campus in Houston, Texas, the Allentown-based Serfass Construction Company is putting the finishing touches on high-rise condominiums in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. The future looks bright for this privately held, family-owned business that has tripled revenue projections in the last three years.

Meet the key players who are shining a new light in construction at Serfass:

To understand and really appreciate the extraordinary growth – despite the last five years of recession – we need to look back to 1948, the year Elmer Serfass founded the company bearing his name.

Initially a painting business, Elmer seized an opportunity to build a church, coincidentally called Hope Church, in 1959, thus christening the commercial construction division of the business. For many years the firm specialized in small residential remodeling projects and operated out of what was known as the Greenawald’s Building on Albright Avenue in Allentown. One successful project led to another. Capacity grew, especially during the last two decades of the twentieth century, mostly fueled by repeat business and referrals.

Additional family members joined the management team including third generation Kevin Serfass who hit the ground running in 2009 following his graduation from Drexel University’s Construction Management Program. Kevin and David Serfass, in partnership with Matthias and Fay Fenstermacher, have choreographed the firm’s emergence into the Construction Management and Design-to-Build arenas. Kevin is particularly proud of the company’s innovative technology-based approach to project management which features web-based virtual modeling. This technique was used in 2010 to erect the new state-of-the-art company headquarters on Mauch Chunk Road in Allentown, just five miles north of the original office.

But it’s not just the exterior of the modern facility that impresses a first-time visitor. The warm, welcoming, light infused lobby is accented with three larger-than-life vertical banners which punctuate the Serfass brand: TRADITION LEADERSHIP DELIVERY.

Once you get to know the company and the people behind the brand, you can easily understand why customers use these three words over and over again to describe Serfass Construction. Their reputation in the marketplace has served them well, particularly over the last five years. Kevin Serfass explains, “We believe we are especially well positioned to take advantage of the recovering economy. During the recession when other firms were laying people off, we were hiring. This allowed us to pick up some of the best project managers and superintendents in the area.” The company anticipates continued growth in the northeast and Texas as more people discover the value and expertise that Serfass Construction has to offer. Kevin continues, “ For many clients a new building will be their largest capital expenditure so we try to make the building experience easy and fun while delivering high value for their investment.” Tom Schantz, Co-Owner of the Sands Event Center in Bethlehem agrees. “Serfass Construction met and exceeded our expectations on this fast-tracked project. Between design and time challenges, they met every goal we set. We will be using Serfass on additional projects we have in the works.”

Apparently many other people share the same sentiment as Mr. Schantz because the pipeline of prospective projects at Serfass is full of promise.
